"No Place Like Home" Analysis

In the second paragraph, Guterson states "Green Valley is as much a verb as a noun", he is referring to the always under construction and constantly trying to out-do itself. "Everywhere on the fringes of its 8,400 acres one finds homes going up, developments going in (another twenty-one developments are under way), the desert in the throes of being transformed in accordance witht he master plan of Green Valley's designer and builder".(183) The town is constantly becoming bigger, being updated and becoming more populated. The town is in action all the time which is why he called it as much a verb as a noun. Guterson's tone throughout the short story is one of sarcasm and mockery. Guterson writes "Inside the civic center were plenty of potted plants, walls of black gass, and red marble floors, but again, no congregating citizens". (184) The city is all about expansion and making profit, there is absolutely no sense of community whatsoever. I believe suburbs are a safe enviroment to be raised in but there are some negatives. The suburbs rarely see crime, violence or anything that would place a child in harm besides the teenager up the street driving twice the speed limit. The suburbs offer a child a place to hang out with other children his age in his neighborhood.

Context Video

The outfit and appearance of both the Hilary and Palin look alike
Palin's Voice
Palin and Clinton appearing together
Every-"anything"
Where Palin Lives-see Russia from house
Words to describe them
Hilary's jealousy
One heartbeat away from being President of USA
"All you have to do is want it"

Watching the Saturday Night Live video of the Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palan parody, there are a few things the viewer must be aware of before seeing the video. The first and most obvious thing is who Palan and Clinton are in politics and what their positions are. Also, Tina Fey's appearance and voice adaptation was spot on if you have ever seen Palan speak in public before. The fact that Palan and Clinton would be appearing together is also funny because they are on opposing sides for the upcoming election. When Palan says that her and Clinton don't agree on everything, she is immediately cut off by Clinton who says "anything"; this is funny because they are on opposing sides and have clashing viewpoints on many important issues. Palan makes a joke about being able to see Russia from her home, the viewer would have to know that Palan is an Alaskan resident and that Russia is very close to the west of Alaska's borderse. Hilary's jealousy throughout the speech regarding how close Palan is to the whitehouse is funny becuase she tried so hard to become the next president and Palan says all you have to do was want it and it will happen. Palan makes a joke saying she is only "one heartbeat away from being President", this references the age and health of McCain and how many people think he is too old and fragile to be the next president.

A Strange Strange Morning

Today was a morning unlike any other...Why is that you might be asking yourself? Well, I woke up today as a woman. The first thing I did was walk over and check myself in the mirror; I actually looked pretty darn good if I may say so myself. I then made my way out to to my car and drove to the mall, I always wondered why women liked shopping so much. I'm not really sure why they do because all the clothes I tried on were very awkward and felt weird, the shoes were terrible! Later I went out to the bars to see what it was like to be a woman out at night. I was given a lot of free drinks at the bar which was a nice change of pace since I am usually the one buying all my drinks.

There's Strong. Then There's Army Strong.

The audience of this advertisement is definitely seniors in high school to college students.
The tone of the text is one of aspiration, joining the army makes you a better person and opens up a lot more doors later on in life.
It is definitely temping to persuade the audience into believing that the U.S. Army is serving a greater good and if you join you will have a greater sense of self worth in your life.
It definitely tries to appeal to the reader's emotions because if you join the army you will become a better person. Also, it is trying to establish it's credibility because everyone knows how incredible the U.S. Army is and how much respect they deserve.
The purpose of this text is to recruit young men into the U.S. Army as a career.
Yes, I believe this text is definitely rhetorically effective because the advertisement makes the reader believe in the message it is trying to convey.

In Class Writing Assignment

Dear Best Friend,
We had a long weekend due to Labor day which was much needed. On Friday afternoon, I received a bid to the Fraternity of my choice, Alpha Tau Omega which everyone here calls ATO. When I got the bid I was so excited, right away I headed down to the ATO house and signed my bid card which meant I was officially starting rush. The same night I headed over to Mike and Patch's house up on Twelth Street, this is the party where I told you I had to run from the police! I was outside when the cops showed up, there was like two or three cars full of them. They came up and asked me if I was the home owner and I said no and tried to make my way back up the steps into the house but its turns out THEY LOCKED ME OUT! At that point, I thought for sure I was going to be arrested or at least given a citation which would have been just as bad. I pounded on the door but they wouldn't let me in because if they opened the door then the cops would have been able to go in as well, so I kind of can't blame them. I ended up waiting till the cops walked back to the front lawn at which point I climbed over the back fence, ran down a small hill then jumped down a ten foot wall into a parking lot. At this point, my heart was pounding and I felt like Jason Bourne on a get away. I ended up making my way back to my dorm room and fell right to sleep, after that the rest of the weekend seemed pretty lame. I didn't do too much until Boomsday, which actually wasn't all that it cracked up to be. Besides that, my weekend wasn't to special.

Dear Grandma,
Tennessee has been a blast so far; thank you for the care package you sent me, it was great! So far classes haven't been too hard which is nice, I have been to the library a couple times to get some homework done. The first football game was kind of a let down, we lost in overtime to UCLA who we should have definitely beat! I have been thinking a lot about the family and how everyone is doing up there in Cincinnati, I heard the Bearcats are off to a good start which is great news. Hopefully the Bengals can do something this year, that would be a change! I miss our trips to Skyline and Frisch's alot, I am already getting tired of all the junk food that I eat down here. I hope everything is going well with everyone up there, I should be back sometime in the begining of October for a couple days or so. I miss you all.
Love,
Tyler

Drug Free America Assignment

First Video
-Short but to the point
-Very startling realization
-Informing message

The first video is one of those short messages that someone will always remember, it gets to the point immediately. The video's tone appeals to the reader's logos, the message is showing the viewer how drugs will definitely mess up their life. The purpose of the first video is definitely to persuade the reader to stay away from drugs and informing the reader that drugs will affect your brain in a dramatically harming way.

Second Video
-VERY hostile
-Very alarming to the viewer
-Definitely gets the message across quickly and affectively

The second video is one of the most hostile commercials I have ever seen, at the same time it is one of the most affective commercials I have ever seen. The tone of the video is very cruel and threatening, it appeals to the readers pathos because it is informing the viewer how much they will mess their life and all their relationships if they use drugs. The purpose of the second video is the exact same of the first video, to keep teenagers off of drugs. I believe the second video is more affective because of how intense the message is delivered so horrifying from a teenage girl.

Olympic Games Images

Observations
-large blue halo
-arms extending up towards halo
-everything revolves around center
-blue and orange jump out

The Olympic Games are one of the most intriguing events the world participates in together. Everyone (usually) puts aside all their arguments and differences for one three week period to compete against each other. The image really jumps out at me because it is displaying an image where everything is being given up to a greater power. The orange masses are raising themselves up to a greater good. We all need to come together right now, quit fighting over our petty differences and just get along. It is time for innocent people to stop dying because their countries leaders are on a power trip.

Ode to My Black Papermate Pen

Black Pen
Black plastic shell
Almost Dried Out
Writers Bros Paper Mate in White writing
Cap is missing

My black pen that I purchased at Target about a week ago tells me that I like to live life one day at a time. I don't mind purchasing cheap pens, I can live my life without buying the most expensive items and still be happy. My pen is dried out because I never remember to put the cap back on because I am always moving onto my next task at hand. All in all, my pen is there when I need it for class or homework.
